“The details are not the details. They make the design.” —Charles Eames
On 29 September, HVW8 Gallery hosts the U.S. unveiling of Sson 003, the bicycle series created by Swedish design innovator Tobias Adolfsson. Suggestive of Charles Eames, Adolfsson creates clean, well-crafted yet affordable bicycles, appealing to those within his culture of fashion, music and design. Eames was heavily entrenched in process, with the process to finalize a product often taking many efforts of trial and error. Adolfsson relates this spirit to his own design principles, resulting in the 3-speed, coaster brake, freewheel and BMX commuter models of Sson 003.
“I mix and match from my personal back catalogue of memories and the urban culture around us,” says Adolfsson. “People with fond memories of their childhood BMX riding around the block, listening to hip hop and watching ET, might know what I mean when riding the Sson 003.” Adolfsson became interested in bicycle design after becoming aware of the fact that most bikes look tacky, likely created by lazy designers. He then engaged in a strategic planning process to fabricate a well-designed, yet low cost and low maintenance bicycle.
The latest Sson bike series brings all Adolfsson has researched, crafted, owned and dreamt about since age four. The actual planning process over the last six years results with a limited edition series of Sson 003 bikes, all painted white to finalize the last step, artistic collaboration.
As Adolfsson believes a bicycle can be as much a fashion product as a pair of modish pants, he leaves it to experienced artists and designers, who are also based in the avant-garde culture, to finalize his most recent craft. Although rooted in strong production principles, the bike surface remains simple, offering the opportunity for others to create a design reflecting their interests and curiosity.
HVW8 Gallery and Sson personally invited 7 artists to translate a model from the 003 series, to reflect their style and preferences of the Swedish handicraft. Paint, drawings, photographs, among other visual aesthetics complement the bike design.
Visit http://www.sson.org to view the previous Sson 003 artist campaign, featuring Swedish artists The Jens, Fox, Burfitt, CKR, Fienden, Stickkontakt, IOH, Strüwer and Ziggy. The opening was held earlier this year, at Stockholm’s Boutique Sportif.

Brent Rollins: Fly Girls: Original Edits + Remixes
Los Angeles, CA – The HVW8 Gallery hosts the much awaited homecoming of graphic artist, Brent Rollins, with the premiere of “Fly Girls: Original Edits + Remixes.” This unique series from the L.A. native mixes the sexiness of the female form with hip-hop informed aesthetics through one-of-a-kind graphic compositions and limited edition digital prints. Opening with a special reception on Friday, Aug. 31st, “Fly Girls” is on view through Sunday, Sept. 23, 2007. The HVW8 Gallery is located by the Fairfax retail district, 661 N. Spaulding Avenue, Los Angeles, open Wednesday-Saturday, 1pm-6pm or by special appointment.
Beginning his professional career at 18, Rollins crafted his style by designing club flyers and logos for classic flicks such as “Mo Better Blues,” “Boyz N The Hood,” and “Dead Presidents.” From there, he art directed the scrappy underground favorite RapPages magazine from publisher Larry Flynt, produced signature graphic collages for albums by Spank Rock, Dilated Peoples, Mos Def/Talib Kweli, and Gang Starr, as well as the walls of the Contemporary Arts Center of Cincinnati, the New York Brecht Forum Gallery, and LA and Tokyo’s Undefeated stores. As a member of NYC’s ego trip collective, Rollins has co-authored two acclaimed books, ego trip’s Book of Rap Lists and ego trip’s Big Book of Racism! and co-produced/art directed their VH1 television programs. After earning a considerable reputation as a graphic artist, Rollins finally comes from out the shadows with “Fly Girls” to say “this is not for (fill in the brand name here). This is for me,” and by extension “this is for you.”
With “Fly Girls,” Rollins brings sexy back via digital collage, produced by a combination of aerosol paint, Xerox transfer and high-quality silk screening. Like a DJ sampling to create a new composition, Rollins’ compositions reflect today’s culture of disposable and recycled images, acknowledging what is done with them, rather than the actual subject matter, is what creates the excitement. “It’s not a new idea,” says Rollins, “but the fun is in working to make something uniquely, recognizably ‘mine’ for others to scrutinize, stand back, and connect with.”
As witnessed in “Fly Girls,” the balance between “flyness” and grace, and abstract and figurative is recognized by Rollins’ earlier collage heroes: Romare Bearden, Terry Gilliam; and the cut-n-pastiche techniques of the Bomb Squad, Dust Brothers, Prince Paul and the many other sampling shoguns that defined the soundtrack of his generation. When observing his technique, one can fashion Rollins as the abandoned kid of the 70’s and 80’s, reared by television who, when left to his own devices, created his own world by making due from whatever was available. The combination of Rollins’ experience and alacrity is seen through his attention to negative space, object shape, the interplay of figurative gesture and, in rap terms, “flow.”
The graphic art of “Fly Girls” consists of large diptych originals, presented in the classic, hip hop tradition by offering a complimentary B-side version, or more aptly, a “remix” print. As the second side extends the value of the recorded single, the limited edition print does so in this case. Each “remix” from the “Fly Girls” series is produced as a smaller, more affordable, but high-quality digital print, available in short run editions of ten.

Opening Sat, April 7th at the HVW8 Gallery, L.A.
30-year-old Dutch illustrator and designer Parra has decorated the Amsterdam underground with his playful, bizarre graphics that span a broad base of themes, from introspective to audacious and bawdy. The mostly self-taught artist seems to channel a Vintage form with curves, yet with a decidedly modern, post-pop approach. His vibrant images, which feature a distinctive, hand-drawn feel, can be seen printed on paper in various exhibitions around the globe, on a flyer for a club near you, on the sleeve of a record, on billboards and silkscreened on tees and sweaters..Parra is represented by the London based agency Big Active (www.bigactive.com) and is co owner of the new wave clothing label Rockwell (www.rockwellclothing.com) Live at the BBQ vol. 2 03/14/06

Banksy 09/30/06
Banksy just had a huge show in L.A.. So big that I was waiting in line at the conerstore, and the tabloids even had articles about the Banksy show. I guess Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie attended and dropped a bunch of change at the opening. Good for Banksy, because he is amazing, and he still finds the time to do pieces around town. Across the street from the HVW8 shop on Melrose he did huge "No More Heroes" piece. He even took the time to deface a piece in alley, writting "Bad Art Hurts Everyone" over the piece and painting the eyes red. Have a look.

Jdilla 2, Montreal 08/02/06
Turf One and DSTRBO painted this tribute piece to Jay Dee, or J Dillla, a legendary hip hop producer from Detroit who died just recently of Lupus, at the ripe old age of 32. They painted it at Academy club, in Montreal, during a ?uestlove set (of the Roots). The proceeds from the party, and the painting, are going to Jay Dee's mom, who still has some of her boy's hospital bills to pay.

The Art Of Rebellion 2 06/09/06
For many decades there have been individuals and groups taking their message, and creativity, to the city streets, to be seen, influenced, criticized, and then re-painted by the public domain. While the message, medium, and tactics vary from person to person, all are creating with persistent passion, and ill-regard to laws and art conformities. Yet just like all art forms, the art on the streets has begun to evolve. This survey of street art introduces various artists including Miss Van, Faile, Heavyweight and Kid Acne. The book includes photos, interviews, and quotes from protagonists from around the world. Big, hardbound, color.
So yesterday, on 06/06/06, I finished the most evil sculpture of one of my little guys, a flesh and blood (sort of) version of the dead baby (it's not a real dead baby, it's just a drawing). My friend Harvey basically did all the work, made a mold of my clay prototype, fitted it with moving parts, etc, and breathed life into an otherwise lifeless shell. We are proud parents!
Come on down to the Sub V gallery in NDG on Friday, June 9, 7pm, 5666 Sherbrooke W. Montréal, to check out our pride and joy, as well as the little runts produced by 14 other weirdos. It should be fun!

About Syracuse Cultural Workers
SYRACUSE CULTURAL WORKERS (SCW) is an educational and cultural organization founded in 1982. Our mission is to help sustain a culture that honors diversity and celebrates community; that inspires and nurtures justice, equality and freedom; that respects our fragile Earth and all its beings; that encourages and supports all forms of creative expression.
We see cultural work as an essential part of and support for political and economic change. Many of our materials celebrate movements for social change and their leaders, thus helping to legitimize history that is largely ignored or trivialized by commercial media and school textbooks. SCW also helps to unite socially concerned artists with a growing audience hungry for meaningful artwork.
About Peace Calender 2006
35th Edition!
The Peace Calendar continues to celebrate and honor resistance to injustice around the world with Colombian artist Javeth Gómez Ledesma's beautiful portrayal of the Campesino Movement of Cajiboo. 40,000 people blocked the Pan American Highway for 26 days demanding economic reforms from the Colombian government. Other themes include: Basra, Iraq librarian saving her books from impending war; 2004 Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai and the Greenbelt Movement; 1960 student activism of the Greensboro (NC) Four; Day of Silence in solidarity with GLBTQ youth; combatting the AIDS plague; the threatened Arctic National Wildlife Refuge; Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping; a powerful illustrated quote on Iraq war resistance by Sgt. Camilo Mejia; a cartoon comment on fear-based "homeland security;" Indian women's 20 year struggle against corporate terror in Bhopal; and a Russian sun worshiper embracing the return of sunshine.
About the painting:

Gene Pendon, HVW8 Collective
Four young black college students sat down at the “whites only” Woolworth’s lunch counter in Greensboro, NC in 1960 and inspired a wave of non-violent direct action across the US. This painting pays tribute to their courage and determination to make change happen. Gene Pendon, of HVW8 Collective, based his painting on the newspaper photograph (by Jack Moebes) of students sitting in on the second day.
Sitting down on Feb.2, 1960,l to r, Joseph McNeil, Franklin McCain, Billy Smith and Clarence Henderson
About the Greensboro 4:
Students Launch “Sit-Down”
Encouraged by the Montgomery, Al bus boycott and Little Rock, AK high school integration, but fed up with the slow pace of change in the segregated South, on February 1, 1960 four young black men sat down at the ‘whites only’ lunch counter of the Greensboro, NX Woolworth’s and waited to be served. The four college freshmen crossed the line of the local custom and walked the talk of a nation ready for change. The Greensboro 4, as they came to be known, took non-violent, direct action and inspired other young people to join them. In April of that year, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) was formed, dedicated to overturning segregation and giving young blacks a stronger voice in the civil rights movement.
In 1961, SNCC joined with activists from CORE (Congress for Racial Equality) and began Freedom Rides to integrate interstate bus facilities. The Freedom Summer campaign registered voters in deeply segregated Mississippi. Young, fed up but not alone – the solidarity of collective, nonviolent action later became a valued tool in the anti-war, women’s liberation and gay/lesbian movements.

LA PREMIERE
In 1994, one man was given the task by the United Nations to ensure that peace was maintained in Rwanda: Canadian General Romeo Dallaire. In 100 nightmarish days, more than 800,000 men, women, and children were brutally murdered. Dallaire was thrown into a country he barely understood, leading ill equipped, untrained troops who did not want to be there.
Unsupported by U.N. headquarters, they were incapable of stopping the killing. This experience led to Dallaire's own life tragedy as he dealt with the psychological fallout of witnessing a genocide he was powerless to stop. Dallaire condemns top U.N. officials, disloyal Belgian troop commanders, and senior members of the Clinton administration who chose to do nothing as he pleaded for reinforcements and revised rules of engagement, convinced that with a few thousand more troops and a mandate to act, he could have stopped the killings.
In April 2004, on the 10th anniversary of the genocide, Peter Raymont followed Dallaire on his first return trip to Rwanda, revisiting the killing fields that still haunt him.

The 6th Annual Thanks Givends Benefit 11/24/04
from Kajmere Sound Events:
Greetings everyone. It's that time again.
The time the collective underground re-unites to raise money for underprivileged youth art programs of Los Angeles. This is the one night where we all come together, big and small, to reminisce this past year and bring a smile to a child's face. It is truly a blessing that we can come together for such a special event.
We lead by our example and for this we thank you all.

Well, the march goes on ...... After the post election hangover/depression, the HVW8 crew is back at it. There might be an asshole in the White house, trouble on the horizon and the U.S. as divided as the pre-civil war/slavery days but you can still expect Heavyweight to carry on with the Political Minded series and some old fashioned Live Painting. See below for upcoming shows in Toronto and Montreal as well as a link to some great photos from our Rude Movements friend, Dustin Ross, taken a few weeks ago in Puerto Rico.
