Before the HVW8 Art + Design Gallery, the principle project of HVW8 was the HVW8 Art Installation, a live painting performance project. Tyler Gibney, Gene Pendon and Dan Buller collaborated to create large music inspired canvases and art installations before live audiences and often with accompanying musicians. The idea was to create large pieces on canvas in a similar way of creating music, with the process being akin to a Jazz Standard, and often finished within three hours. Thus the first ‘Art Band’ was born. From 1999 through 2008, the HVW8 Art Installation was lucky to tour, exhibit and perform throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe and Japan, creating hundred’s of music inspired pieces.

Here is an excerpt from an interview with HVW8′s Tyler Gibney on Hi-Fi’s recent acquisition of number of pieces from the HVW8 Gallery.

CF (Vanessa Conley): What can we expect from this collection of artists?

The Hifi acquired a number of pieces and prints from the HVW8 Gallery. This represents a good cross section of what the Gallery is about, with a mandate of representing avant-garde graphic design; Some of best international artists of this genre.

‘Past & Present’ is the theme of the collection. What does this entail?

HVW8 started in a golden era of Montreal in 1998. In 2005 we opened the Gallery in West Hollywood. This represents pieces from the past 14 years to present. The artwork ranges from myself, HVW8 Art Collective to number of past alumni at the HVW8 Gallery.

How does the aspect of music contribute in this collection?

We’ve always had music and music artists at the Gallery … Mos Def, Snoop Dog, Mayer Hawthorne, Master Blazter have all done things at the space, as well a number of bands were created during live recordings at the Gallery. Art and music have a symbiotic relationship – aural and visual, but the process is the same, so I think there is context for the two to live together, and I try to do that at the Gallery. These pieces reflect this.

What can this HVW8 installation bring to Calgary to help develop the local arts scene?

I’m from Calgary, went to Montreal, ended up in Los Angeles and now I’m back here, all through art and music.

Art can be a very difficult term to define. What is art to you?

Art is a mediation and reflection of life. Art is the times.

Can you explain how HVW8 Art Collective works?

We started off as three guys coming together creating live pieces and we were lucky to travel around the world. We had installations and exhibitions in cities such as Tokyo, Munich, London, Amsterdam, New York, Miami, San Juan, Puerto Rico to name a few. We were the first ‘Art Band’ creating pieces collectively.

Marc McKee Seen/UnKnown

We started the year off with Mark McKee’s Seen/Unknown. This exhibit consisted of a selection of Mark McKee’s personal favorites from over 20 years of legendary skateboard artwork. From old classic decks to new limited edition prints to never-before-seen original drawings and paintings, McKee’s work is a must see for skateboarders and art enthusiasts alike.

Dust La Rock’s Joking Victim

Joshua Prince, aka Dust La Rock, made his Los Angeles gallery debut with the new exhibition Joking Victim, an intimate, stark exploration into the themes of pain versus pleasure, free will versus destiny, fetishism, the occult and mortality. A true mixed media collaboration, Joking Victim consisted of works on paper, photographs, and a short film in which La Rock teamed with a team of innovative artists to help bring his vision to life, including photographers Angela Boatwright, Kareem Black and tattoo artist JK5. The opening reception featured music by Jokers Of The Scene and culminated with the Los Angeles debut of Bruce LaBruce’s queer cinema horror film L.A. Zombie.

Anthony Lister Junk Food Arthouse at HVW8

Anthony Lister’s tireless approach to living is an unrelenting approach to art. His name and imagery are on street corners worldwide, accessing a massive audience by way of stickers, aerosol paint and all manner of markers. His paintings, drawings, sculptures and happenings pull from his experiences as a youth in Australia and as a father of two. Super Heroes, skateboarding, graffiti, Australian gangster celebrities, television, jail birds, tattoos, the internet, pop and advertising resurface in his art practice. With invitational residencies in London and New York, a mentorship under Max Gimblett, a CV as long as your arm—including shows at Elms Lester London, New Image Art L.A., Metro 5 Gallery Melbourne and K Gallery Italy—numerous awards and monographs, Anthony Lister’s renown among peers, curators and collectors is testament not just to his extreme productivity but his work’s exceptional potency.

The How Original Show by Parra

Dutch artist Parra returned to Los Angeles’ HVW8 Art + Design Gallery with The How Original Show. An exhibition consisting of all new work in the form of drawings and paintings, revealing the process of sketch to final piece. Each work is an original, a departure from his well known numbered silkscreen editions. Look out for Parra at the SF MOMA in March.

We Was Them Kids … Group Exhibition

With “We Was Them Kids …”, HVW8 curator Tyler Gibney pulled together some of the finest contemporary artist/designers to have exhibited at the HVW8 Gallery in recent years.

Works ranged from Amsterdam resident Parra’s post-pop imagery of highly saturated colors, vibrant hand-drawn letters and worlds inhabited by hybrid, surreal characters to Geoff McFetridge’s communicative pieces in sculpture, drawing and design that echo with humor and insight. Yogi Proctor proliferates decoys. These works span a variety of mediums, appearances, and approaches, de-stablizing notions of “originality” and “artist” with wit and agility.

From Brooklyn, Kevin Lyons brought his sharp tongue together with sharpie, stepping away from his A-List clientele as Creative Director of the internationally known ad agency Anomoly, to have some fun with his madhouse of characters and type. Brent Rollins (best known for his Boyz In The Hood and Mo Better Blues logos as well as being one of the creators of Ego Trip) continued his visual relationship between design and music, while Miami’s Alvaro Ilizarbe’s work explored space, energy, and tension through hypnotizing large scale black and white patterns.

Winston Tseng and Matt Irving departed from their skateboard and design backgrounds with original work, and French born/Hong Kong resident Charles Munka (well known in Los Angeles for his work with Flying Lotus) brought his post graffiti stylings to round out this exhibition.

In Feburary we hosted the Dogghouse with adidas and Snoop where different artists came to celebrate the art of Joe Cool and Snoop.  We were lucky to have an impromptu performance with Snoop and Dam-Funk in the Gallery parking lot.

MASTER BLAZTER

Computer Jay, J-1 and D-F stepped the game up with a “more funk than jazz” Super Session recorded live at the HVW8 Art + Design Gallery. This grew into the group Master Blazter. Master Blazter demonstrates how the LA modern funk and boogie scene is starting to bubble and come together. This was the first time that these guys played as a group and it was a completely improvised session in front of a intimate crowd at the HVW8 Gallery. More to come.

New work from our friend Alvaro Ilizarbe

The focus of this installation was about the relationship between space and energy. Comfort and tension. I painted a black and white pattern on a large piece that hung on the outside of the space. This same pattern was photographed and made into wallpaper that was plastered on the walls of the passageway/maze. The passageway was a space for the viewer to travel through and connect with the work.

The work was exhibited at the Wynwood Art Fair for Carol Jazzar Gallery.

In search of some new, Black Spade migrated out west to soak up the vibrant Southern California vibes and promptly met producer Proh Mic at the famed Do-Over. The two hit it off and began toying with music, soon bringing I,Ced, another St. Louis expat in LA, into the fold. The collective was taking shape and drew their moniker from ‘Ced’s residence in Hawthorne, California. The St. Louis natives reached out to their old comrade Coultrain and he eventually moved out to LA as well. A jam session at the HVW8 Gallery solidified the group’s identity and the creative relationship with it’s owner resulted in an eponymous EP in 2009. Made up of songs done with no intention of release, the EP was the first physical manifestation of Hawthorne Headhunters on HVW8 Records in 2009.

The creative process of the newly formed group was very natural. Members of the group liken the approach to that of old Jazz musicians; organic and instinctual, drawing from whatever influences they were feeling and writing about whatever was on their mind. ; They began plotting a full length record, but Proh Mic and Ced decided to pursue solo endeavors instead of focusing on the group and ‘Train and Spade became the official torch-bearers of Hawthorne Headhunters. The duo went in the studio and Myriad of Now was recorded, a 14-track collection of Funk, Electro, R and more that speaks on spirituality, sexuality and everything in between. Carrying on the lineage of Black music dating back to the Blues and the inception of Jazz, Hawthorne Headhunters melt influences together to break new ground.

Had a chance to stop by the Pulse Art Fair today and visit with Jen Stark at the Show and Tell Gallery booth.

Her work is amazingly detailed layered cut outs from wood and paper, that are labored, intricate and often take over a month to complete. The work puts you into a hypnotic state and have a kaleidoscope effect with moving parts and animation. We were lucky to be introduced to Jen through Alvaro Ilizarbe, her Miami counterpart and companion, at his HVW8 Gallery opening last year.

The How Original Show by Parra.

Parra (b.1976) is best known for his curved post-Pop imagery, highly saturated colors, vibrant hand-drawn letters and worlds inhabited by hybrid, surreal characters. Celebrated by galleries and championed by an underground following from the outset, Parra has quickly become a respected and eclectic artist worldwide. Working across drawing, painting, animation and sculpture, Parra creates an enigmatic and instantly recognizable style that defies easy categorization. Parra is cofounder of cult apparel label Rockwell Clothing and a member of electronic music group Le Le. Parra lives and works in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Thanks to everyone who came out to the HVW8 produced Video Shoot for Snoop Dogg’s ‘Wonder What It Do’  featuring Uncle Chucc, filmed Tuesday in downtown Los Angeles.

We were also treated to a surprise appearance by KRS-One that brought about an impromptu performance with Snoop that covered all the BDP classics, as well as a freestyle backed by Computer Jay, J-1 and Battle Cat, while HVW8′s Dstrbo did a live painting of Nate Dogg and Snoop.

JUSTIN ‘KUTMAH’ MCNULTY was born in Brighton, England and moved to the United States when he was twelve years old.  KUTMAH grew up in Hollywood, California where he earned his reputation as a talented underground artist & DJ.  As an intrinsic member of the Los Angeles-based music collective dublab, KUTMAH launched his seminal club Sketchbook in 2004, which forgedroots of the now-infamous L.A. beat scene.

On May 5th 2010 without any advanced warning and based on no criminal activity, armed U.S. Federal agents entered KUTMAH’s home and arrested him. Kutmah was incarcerated for two months under immigration charges. Sparking the FREE KUTMAH campaign, a collective of artists, friends and fans  rallied for the release of the well-respected artist. The incredible global support behind the FREE KUTMAH campaign showed the power of his presence in modern art & music.  Upon KUTMAH’s release, he was immediately deported to the UK where he currently resides.

It was during his time spent locked-up that KUTMAH sought solace in art, drawing to keep sane with only a short pencil and his laminated ID card. The frustrated and emotional impact of his imprisonment and deportation have come to fruition with “Two Soups And A Honeybun”, the full collection of 37 drawings KUTMAH created in prison.  ”Two Soups And A Honeybun” debuted in London at 18 Hewett Street gallery on January 19th 2011. To celebrate the initial exhibition KUTMAH also launched “The New Error”, his exclusive three-part mix cd series released with long-time collaborators Hit+Run.

The Los Angeles exhibition of “Two Soups And A Honeybun” debuts May 12th at HVW8 Gallery in Hollywood.  For KUTMAH’s hometown reception he has created “The New Error Vol. 2″, an exclusive 80-minute mix cd, as well as a limited-edition screenprinted poster, and 92-page art book of the entire “Two Soups And A Honeybun” collection.  KUTMAH’s global art tour will culminate in Japan this summer with a special month-long showing in Tokyo, alongside record shop in-stores and an official opening night afterparty with djs and live performances.

Over the last year KUTMAH has toured Europe, djing shows with Saul Williams, The Gaslamp Killer, Flying Lotus, Gonjasufi, The Cinematic Orchestra, Dabrye and others.  KUTMAH also has forthcoming records out onStones Throw, Brainfeeder, Poo-Bah & All City Records in 2011.

He began his career in the mid eighties making a series of short experimental super 8 films and co-editing a punk fanzine called J.D.s, which begat the queercore movement. He has contributed his stories and photography to a host of magazines ranging from Vice, to the National Post, Purple Fashion, Butt, and US porn magazines Honcho and Inches. His film, L.A. LOS ANGELES – April 2011 – Joshua Prince, aka Dust La Rock, makes his Los Angeles gallery debut with the new exhibition Joking Victim, an intimate, stark exploration into the themes of pain versus pleasure, free will versus destiny, fetishism, the occult and mortality. A true mixed media collaboration, Joking Victim consists of works on paper, photographs, and a short film in which La Rock teamed with a team of innovative artists to help bring his vision to life, including photographers Angela Boatwright, Kareem Black and tattoo artist JK5. The opening reception will feature music by Jokers Of The Scene and culminate with the Los Angeles debut of Bruce LaBruce’s queer cinema horror film L.A. Zombie.

Hailed as a “cult NYC designer” by Dazed and Confused, La Rock’s work has greatly influenced the current landscape of urban fashion and music. As co-founder and creative director of Fool’s Gold, the taste-making record label called an “indie visionary” by Billboard, La Rock’s unique aesthetic has been sought out by MTV, Nike, and Hennessey. La Rock’s latest creative endeavor in psycho-surreal expressionism takes him to the gallery walls of HVW8 for Joking Victim.

As the “victim” or protagonist in a number of pieces, La Rock utilizes his body as both medium and canvas. In his works on paper, including the central piece “Joking Victim,” the artist uses his own bodily fluids combined with ink and paper for a textured, provocative effect. In the photography series “Skin Canvas,” La Rock becomes the subject as Boatwright documents him receiving a tattoo from JK5. The images capture needle against flesh, as art is turned visceral. Using paper towels to soak up the blood and ink, La Rock displays the resulting patterns in a hanging collage. In the short film “The Ritual,” shot by Black, artist becomes subject once again as La Rock submits himself to a dominatrix.

Other works on display further address the themes of BDSM, death and the religious philosophy of magick. A vessel for experiencing both pain and pleasure, “Joking Victim” is a study in duality, exploring the multitude of ways in which people use and abuse their bodies to satisfy divergent impulses.

The opening reception will feature music by Fools Gold producers and DJs Jokers Of The Scene. Acting as artist and muse, the Toronto duo’s moody, experimental single “Joking Victim” inspired the title of La Rock’s exhibit, and their music also serves as a soundtrack to “The Ritual.”

An exclusive 7” vinyl single featuring a new version of Jokers Of The Scene’s “Joking Victim” along with a remix by Vin Sol will be available for purchase at the opening. A limited-edition collaborative print by La Rock and LaBruce, featuring L.A. Zombie star Francois Sagat, will also be made available in honor of the film’s screening during the reception.

The opening takes place on April 14th, 7:00-10:00 p.m. at HVW8 Art and Design Gallery, 661 N. Spaulding Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90036. The reception is open to the public w/ RSVP at rsvp_jokingvictim@hvw8.com and runs until May 8th. Artists will be in attendance.

Dust La Rock has helped create a visual identity for an entire scene as co-founder and creative director of the independent music powerhouse Fool’s Gold, home to artists like A-Trak, Kid Sister and Duck Sauce. The Brooklyn based graphic designer, illustrator and “part-time savant” got his start in 1997 as a self-taught designer for Ecko Unlimited, helping the company emerge as a key brand in the early streetwear movement. Kareem Black is a New York-based, Philly-born photographer and director. After attending SVA on a scholarship, Kareem began to shoot almost immediately for publications like The Fader and Vibe upon graduation. Since then, Kareem has won numerous awards, including a feature as one of the PDN 30. Along with his commissioned work, Kareem keeps occupied with a variety of personal projects including a series of images inspired by the works of Guy Bourdin and a new website, feelsgoodletsgo.com, that captures the downtown New York culture he inhabits. Angela Boatwright cut her teeth as a teenager shooting Kurt Cobain in a closet-sized venue and capturing the grittiness of the underground New York hardcore and skateboarding scenes in the early-Nineties. The Ohio-born photographer has since worked her way into major campaign ads for Rock Band, Roxy, Converse, Miller Genuine Draft, American Express and Urban Outfitters. She’s photographed musicians and celebrities such as Nicki Minaj, Depeche Mode, the Black Crowes, and Interpol, and her photos have been featured in major international print media such as New York, Spin, and Nylon. Angela is currently working on her life project: a full-length documentary movie in which she is directing, filming and producing about heavy metal bands that tour relentlessly throughout the year.   www.angelaboatwright.com

JK5 aka Joseph Ari Aloi is a Brooklyn based designer, writer, toy creator, media franchiser, filmmaker, Flowbot leader, and tattoo artist. He has collaborated with brands such as Nike, Kid Robot, Converse, Saks 5th Avenue, and Mishka NYC, and his work has been exhibited in galleries across the globe, including Deitch Projects, Laforet Gallery in Tokyo, and Alife NYC. In 1989 Marc McKee started creating skateboard graphics for World Industries and many of its subsidiaries, like Blind, 101, Menace, A-Team and Almost. Spearheaded by McKee, this era is considered the golden age of skateboard art, touting funny and offensive graphics that were hugely popular then and remain so today. McKee was also the editor of Big Brother Magazine during its first four years and later worked on the Blunt Snowboard Magazine, before selling both to Larry Flynt Publications. Today, McKee continues to make art for skateboard companies.

The Art of Marc McKee marks the first installment of the Seen Unknown series edited by Winston Tseng, art director for Enjoi Skateboards. Tseng has worked with some of today’s most genre-defying visual artists and designers whose work extends well beyond skateboard culture. From sneaker and apparel design to product packaging, posters, high-profile ad campaigns, and fine art galleries, the work of Seen Unknown artists is often recognizable, though their creators’ names remain unknown—until now. “The Crazy 8 Illustrations” produced by HVW8 for adidas, filmed in Montreal. The paintings provided the back drop for this weekend’s Adi-Hoop tournament in Santa Monica, featuring teams from local luminaries including Undefeated, HVW8, The Hundreds, Girl Skateboards and the West Coasters with Chris Brown, Snoop and the Game to name a few. Hosted by Ken Jeong.

The West Coasters ended up beating the Skull Candy team in the finals, with Team HVW8 coming in a respecatable third.

With the holidays upon us, we thought it would be the perfect time to drop this first installment of a two part edition of the HVW8 Int’l Podcast.

Dam-Funk and tAz Arnold, performing together for the very first time at the HVW8 Gallery Music Series. This was a highly anticipated collaboration that did not disappoint – not that there were any doubts. The two heavyweights were joined by Thunder Cat, Major, Terrace Martin, Krondon and others on a funk adventure that builds and evolves. The final jam will blow your mind.

This Sunday we’re proud to present 2 of LA’s finest – Dam-Funk and tAz Arnold – coming together for a live improvised music set. Expect the unexpected from these 2 champions of funk.

The HVW8 Gallery has held host to numerous performances over the past few years, where bands such as Master Blazter and the Hawthorne Headhunters were created during live music sets. On alternating Sunday afternoons with residents Ty G and Max, you might find DJs or musicians such as Mayer Hawthorne and The County, Aloe Blacc with Jamie Strong (Do-Over), Black Spade, Twilite Tone, House Shoes, Computer Jay, Dam-Funk, Pollyn, Daz-I-Kue, Them Jeans or thee Mike B recording live for HVW8′s International Podcast.
